Feb. 15, 2011
BOSTON, Mass. - The 12th-ranked Emmanuel College Saints took advantage of numerous Emerson College errors and took a 3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match from the Lions in Emerson's Brown & Plofker Gym. The Saints took the contest by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-20, as Emmanuel improved to 14-4 on the season and 5-1 in the league.
After an evenly matched start, the Saint capitalized on a 4-0 run to take a commanding 22-15 lead. Kills by Matt Salvi (Trumbull, Conn.) and Thomas McCaffrey (Massapequa, N.Y.) and an Emerson attack error gave the Saints game one, at 25-18.
Emerson led 19-17 in the second set, but Emmanuel scored eight of the next nine points to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
An Emerson block by Jake Bennett (Hull, Mass.) put the Lions within 22-19 in the final set. However, Emmanuel took control with kills by McCaffrey and Curtis Abram (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) and finished the match on a kill by Zachary Caron (Hope, R.I.).
Abram led Emmanuel with 11 kills and 6 digs, while Tyson Rietz (Granite Bay, Calif.) added 10 kills and 8 digs for the Saints. Setter Nick Updike added 6 kills and dished out 31 assists, while libero Jake DeLuise (Wakefield, R.I.) collected a team-high 15 digs in the backrow for Emmanuel.
Jeff Ackerstein (Newton, Mass.) had six attacks to lead the Lions.
Emerson will travel to 10th-ranked Rivier College on Thursday evening for a 7:00 match. Emmanuel travels to Albertus Magnus for an 11:00am match on Sunday. Both matches are GNAC events.
