SAINTS BRAVE THE WEATHER AT POP CROWELL INVITATIONAL
Oct. 3, 2009
WENHAM, Mass. - The rain and mud brings out the toughness in most cross country runners and the Saints showed they had the endurance and stamina to compete this weekend at Gordon Colleghe's Pop Crowell Invitational. Freshman Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.) proved she was able to handle the rain-soaked course. She led the women's team to a 16th place finish out of 30 schools. The next Saints to finish were sophomore Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.) and junior Victoria Cole (Carver, Mass.), who were both hampered by injuries. Sophomore, Marissa LaFlamme (Newburyport, Mass.) ran her seasonal best time and she was followed by sophomore Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.).
Stephen Armstrong's (Revere, Mass.) 21st place finish out of the field of 221 runners helped the Emmanuel men to an 8th place overall finish out of 24 teams. Emmanuel was the 2nd GNAC team to place after Johnson & Wales University's impressive 2nd place finish. Sophomore Maurizio Turco (Malden, Mass.) improved on his personal best with his 31st place finish. Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.) moved up to the 3rd spot for the Saints. Freshmen Alen Smajic (Revere, Mass.) and a vastly improved junior Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Maine) rounded out the scoring for the team. Senior co-captain Doug Gillum (West Boylston, Mass.) continued to improve on his best, while rookie sophomore Gregory Brown (Norton, Mass.) improved on his seasonal best by over 4 minutes.
Both the men's and women's team will next return to action on Friday, October 16th, as they host the 5th Annual Saints Invitationa at Franklin Park. This year's meet looks like it will be the biggest one yet with over 18 schools competing.
