EMMANUEL HOSTS 5TH ANNUAL SAINTS INVITATIONAL

BOSTON, Mass. - Emmanuel College hosted the 5th Annual Saints Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational on Friday at Franklin Park. MIT took first place as a team in both the men's and women's races. The MIT women are currently ranked 3rd nationally and the MIT men are ranked 9th in New England. Johnson & Wales rookie Greg Redfield (Penfield, N.Y.) won the men's race with his 8k time of 26:02.50. MIT's sophomore Katherine Eve (Fremont, Calif.) was the women's winner with a 5k time of 18:50.34. With close to 300 runners, this was the largest meet in the five-year history of the event.
The Emmanuel women placed 9th out of the 19 competing teams. The Saints were paced by sophomore Brittany Sorice (Dover, N.H.), who ran a 22.30.07 time and finished 44th out of the field of 146 runners. Scoring second for Emmanuel was freshman Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.), who completed the race in 22:34.67. Sophomore Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.) finished just behind DelSignore with a time of 22:38.84. DelSignore and Gomes placed 48th and 49th, respectively.
Emmanuel freshman Meaghan Reddy (Warwick, R.I.) placed fourth for the Saints with her time of 23:10.71. Junior Victoria Cole (Carver, Mass.) was the Saints' fifth and final point-scorer with a 23:19.11 time.
Saints alum Betsy Suda, who still holds multiple Emmanuel cross-country and track program records, ran the women's race unattached. Suda took home some hardware, finishing in 3rd place overall with a remarkable time of 19:30.27.
On the men's side, Emmanuel placed 6th out of the 17 total teams. The Saints were led by sophomore Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.). Armstrong finished 35th out of the field of 150 male runners with his time of 28:21.56. Classmates Maurizio Turco (Revere, Mass.) and Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.) followed close behind, finishing 39th and 40th, respectively.
Freshman Alen Smajic (Revere, Mass.) scored in 4th for Emmanuel with a time of 29:42.86. Junior Ben Cleveland (Auburn, Maine) rounded out the scoring for the Saints with a time of 31:31.25.
Both the men's and women's teams will compete on October 31st in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by Rivier College in Nashua, N.H.
