COLE, ARMSTRONG LEAD SAINTS AT CODFISH BOWL
Sept. 26, 2009
BOSTON, Mass. - Junior co-captain Victoria Cole (Carver, Mass) led the Emmanuel Women's Cross Country Team to a 19th place finish against one of the strongest fields of competition they will face all season. The women's 30th Annual Codfish Bowl was held at Franklin Park on Saturday morning. The meet was won by Division I Stony Brook University. MIT, which is ranked 5th nationally and Bates College were the first two Division III teams to finish. This meet typically offers the first opportunity for top NCAA DI, II & III teams, along with nationally ranked club teams, to compete on the same course that they will be competing on later in upcoming championship meets.
Freshman Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.) moved up to the 2nd spot on the team with her strong gutsy performance. She was followed by sophomore Marissa LaFlamme (Newburyport, Mass.). Sophomore co-captain Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.) and junior Meredith Martelli (Perrysburg, Ohio) rounded out the scoring for Emmanuel.
The men were led by sophomore co-captain Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.), who ran a minute faster than he did last year in this same meet. He was followed by his former high school teammates Maurizio Turco (Revere, Mass.) and freshman Alen Smajic (Revere, Mass.). Sophomore Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.) and sophomore transfer Christopher Blanchette (Chester, N.H.) completed the scoring for the men's team. Senior co-captain Doug Gillum (West Boylston, Mass.) had a huge 5:39 improvement on his previous season-best time.
The Saints will travel to Gordon College next Saturday to compete in the Pop Crowell Invitational. This will be the first opportunity for the Saints to compete against most of the GNAC teams.
