WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY WINS TRAVIS FULLER INVITE; MEN PLACE 3RD OF 9 TEAMS

Buzzard's Bay, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Cross Country Team won the Massachusetts Maritime Academy's Travis Fuller Invitational on Saturday morning. The Saints placed 1st out of eleven competing teams. This was the Emmanuel women's team's second win at this meet in the past three years. The Emmanuel men's team finished 3rd out of the nine schools competing in the race.
Emmanuel's junior captain Victoria Cole (Carver, Mass.) led the way for the Saints, running the 3-mile course in 21:15 and placing 5th overall out of the 70 female runners. Sophomore Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, Mass.) ran second for Emmanuel and 11th overall with a time of 21:40. Freshman Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.) followed in 12th place with a time of 21:41. The 4th and 5th point scorers for the Saints were freshman Meaghan Reddy (Warwick, R.I.) and junior Meredith Martelli (Perrysburg, Pa.). Reddy ran 14th with a time of 21:46, while Martelli finished 20th with her time of 22:41. Two of Emmanuel's top five runners, Reddy and Martelli, were running in their first collegiate cross country meet.
Sophomore Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.) paced the men's team to a third place finish and a 1st place finish among all of the competing GNAC teams. Armstrong ran the 5-mile course in 28:42 and placed 3rd out of the 66 male runners. Armstrong was followed by fellow Revere High School alum Alen Smajic (Revere, Mass.), who finished11th overall with a time of 30:01. Sophomore Wesley Cowles (Hebron, Conn.) ran 3rd for the Saints and 14th overall with his 30:17 time. Sophomore Maurizio Turco (Revere, Mass.) scored 4th for Emmanuel, running a 30:54 race and snagging 20th in the field. Freshman Christopher Blanchette (Chester, N.H.). was the Saints' 5th point scorer, finishing in 31:40 and placing 25th overall.
The Saints will take this weekend off and return to action on Saturday, September 26th. Emmanuel will compete in the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park, beginning at 11am.
