EMMANUEL MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS WIN TRAVIS FULLER INVITATIONAL

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – The Emmanuel College Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams each took first place this Saturday, winning the 2010 Massachusetts Maritime Lt. Travis J. Fuller Invitational Meet. The Emmanuel men’s team placed all five of its scorers in the top 11, while the Emmanuel women placed their five scorers in the top 12 to earn back-to-back team championships. The 6th Annual Invitational was held alongside Cape Cod Canal on the Mass. Maritime campus. This was the second consecutive win at this meet for the Emmanuel women’s team. Emmanuel junior Abdi Ibrahim set a course record and took first place overall, pacing the Saints.
The Emmanuel women, who ran at 10:00 this morning, posted a team score of 40 points in the competition, outdistancing runner-up Emerson and third-place Merchant Marine’s totals of 62 and 107 points, respectively. Mount Ida and Framingham State placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with team scores of 128 and 144 points, while New York Maritime (147 points), Suffolk (222 points) and host Massachusetts Maritime (225 points) followed in sixth, seventh and eighth places, respectively. Newbury (232 points), Curry (252 points), Rivier (259 points) and Eastern Nazarene (276 points) rounded out the team scoring in places nine through 12, respectively, in the competition.
Merchant Marine sophomore Gretchen Holoubek (Severna Park, Md.) took top individual honors on the day, as she covered the three mile layout in a time of 19:03, outdistancing Emerson sophomore Heather Hoglund’s (Groton, Mass.) runner-up time of 19:22. Sophomore and GNAC Performer of the Week Joslyn DelSignore (Taunton, Mass.), senior and GNAC Rookie of the Week Alison Lynch (Pawtucket, R.I.) and freshman Danielle Martin (York, Maine) placed third, seventh and 10th, respectively, for team champion Emmanuel.
Framingham State’s Katherine Anderson and UMass Boston freshman Heather Lucas finished fourth and fifth, respectively. New York Maritime sophomore Jackie Bellisari (Albertson, N.Y.) placed sixth individually, while Newbury sophomore Solange Thomas (Webster, Mass.) and Emerson sophomore Courtney Carter (Hudson, N.H.) rounded out the top 10 by finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, in the competition. Freshman Kayla D’Angelo (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior captain Maureen Kellett (Westborough, Mass.) rounded out the top five scoring for the champion Saints.
On the men’s side, junior and GNAC Performer of the Week Abdi Ibrahim’s (East Boston, Mass.) course record pace of 25:35 led Emmanuel to the team championship. The Saints placed their top five finishers in the top 11 to post a team score of 31 points in the competition, outdistancing runner-up Emerson and third-place Merchant Marine’s totals of 66 and 67 points, respectively. The Saints, who finished third at this meet in 2009, improved by 42 points this season.
New York Maritime and Massachusetts Maritime placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with team scores of 90 and 107 points, while UMass Boston (180 points), Suffolk (207 points) and Mount Ida (209 points) rounded out the team scoring.
Ibrahim finished a full 1:13 ahead of Massachusetts Maritime freshman Brent Schouler (Hyannis, Mass.) in the individual competition over the five mile layout, as Schouler posted a freshman record time of 26:48. Juniors Stephen Armstrong (Revere, Mass.) and Maurizio Turco (Revere, Mass.), along with freshman Michael Morris (Stoughton, Mass.), placed third, seventh and ninth, respectively, for Emmanuel.
Sophomore Kyle Oppenheimer (Kingston, N.H.) and freshman Brendan Stackhouse (Wolfeboro, N.H.) finished fourth and fifth for Emerson, respectively. Sophomore Luke Milano (Wantagh, N.Y.) recorded a sixth place individual effort for New York Maritime, while the Merchant Marine tandem of juniors Ross Whepley (Mastic Beach, N.Y.) and Thomas Fossa (Fleming Island, Fla.) rounded out the top 10 by finishing eighth and 10th, respectively, in the competition. Emmanuel freshman Nathan Bruno (Lenox, Mass.) was the fifth point-scorer for the Saints and finished in 11th place overall.
Both the Emmanuel Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams will be back in action on Saturday, September 25th, as the Saints compete at Franklin Park in The Codfish Bowl.
