Oct. 6, 2011
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team stunned the undefeated Vikings of Salem State University, 7-2, on Thursday night in a non-conference match played on the courts at the Winsor School. The win boosts the Saints to 8-1 on the season, while Salem State slides to 7-1 overall.
The afternoon match opened with the visitors taking two of the three doubles matches. Salem State's first doubles team of Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass.) and Lauren Turenne (Reading, Mass.) topped Emmanuel's \#1 pair of Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.), 8-4. Patricia Quartararo (Lexington, Mass.) and Anna Yaskell (Stockholm, Sweden) teamed up for the Vikings only other point of the match, defeating Emmanuel's Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) and Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.), 8-4, in third doubles.
All eyes then turned to court two for the No. 2 doubles pairing of Emmanuel sophomores Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) and Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) taking on Salem State's Carly Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.) and Melissa Govertsen (Billerica, Mass.). Woznicki and Konecnik got down early, trailing the Vikings, 4-1. Muniz and Govertsen then pushed it to a 7-4 advantage, before the momentum switched sides of the court. The Saints put together an incredible run and came back to take the match, 9-7.
The Vikings owned a 2-1 match lead heading into the singles action, but the Saints swept all six singles matches en route to the 7-2 win. Five of the six singles matches were won in straight sets by the Saints. Dey rolled to a 6-3, 6-0 win over McEwen in No. 1 singles. Hadlock knocked off Turenne, 6-4, 6-2, in No. 2 singles. Reid trailed 5-4 to open her 4th singles match, but battled back to upend Muniz, 7-5 in the first set and 6-3 in the second.
Konecnik took on Govertsen in 5th singles, winning, 6-2, 6-1. Hewes earned a No. 6 singles win over Jessica Spinale (Saugus, Mass.), 6-2, 6-2. Woznicki played in her second intense battle of the day, taking on Quartararo at No. 3 singles. Quartararo won set one, 4-6, and Woznicki equalized it in set two, 6-2. With the team match decided, she then picked up a 10-3 win in a super-tiebreaker to take the match.
The Saints will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action this Sunday afternoon, when they host the Lions of Emerson College in a 1:00 PM start. The three seniors on the Emmanuel squad (Lauren Lesko, Victoria Trull and Erin Thornton) will be honored prior to the start of the match.
