TENNIS TEAM POSTS SECOND-STRAIGHT GNAC SWEEP

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team cruised to its second-straight Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) sweep, defeating the Falcons of Albertus Magnus College, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon. The Saints swept both singles play and doubles play, taking all but 3 games from the visiting Falcons, in the conference match played on the Winsor School tennis courts.
Emmanuel College's senior pair of Lauren Lesko (Plymouth, Mass.) and Victoria Trull (Lowell, Mass.) upended Albertus Magnus' Sandybell Anorga and Na'Tasha Mesidor at first doubles. With their second-straight doubles win, Lesko and Trull are undefeated this season.
Lexi Rogers (North Hampton, N.H.) and Taryn Medeiros (Saugus, Mass.) topped Chantal Simmons and Gina D'Agostino at No. 2 doubles. Emmanuel's Brittany Rothstein (Tiverton, R.I.) and Christine Cuddemi (Saugus, Mass.) downed Albertus' Renita Moore and Sogona Sacko at third dubs. The Saints' second and third doubles teams were both playing in their first matches of the 2011 season. Emmanuel won all three doubles matches, 8-0.
In the singles play, sophomore Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) defeated Anorga in straight sets at No. 1 singles. Classmate Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) was victorious at No. 2 singles over Mesidor. Freshman and GNAC Rookie of the Week Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.) took a third singles win from Simmons. Hewes is now 4-0 on the season.
Emmanuel freshman Alex Jennings (Granby, Conn.) won in her first collegiate match at 4th singles, topping Rebecca Weinberger in straight sets. Fellow freshman Kelsey Barrasso (Nahant, Mass.) won at 5th singles, defeating Haley Manson. The Saints' No. 6 singles point came via a 6-0, 6-3 win by senior captain Erin Thornton (Worcester, Mass.) over Albertus Magnus' Malika Grant. Thornton's streak of undefeated play is currently in its third season.
With the win, the Saints are now 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in GNAC play. Emmanuel will play again on Tuesday afternoon. The Saints will host GNAC and Colleges of the Fenway (COF) Simmons College on the Winsor School courts at 4:00 PM.
