2011 SEASON IN REVIEW
November 10, 2011
BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College women's soccer team wrapped up the 2011 season with an overall record of 10-8-2 and a 6-6-1 record in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, producing a double-digit win total for the fifth consecutive year. Along the way, Head Coach Wayne Currie captured his 100th career victory to become the first coach in the program's history to reach the milestone.
The squad opened the year very strong, winning its first four games and six of the first seven contests to stand at 6-1-0 overall through mid-September. In the opening weekend of action at the Husson University Classic, EC posted a 3-1 win over the hosts on 9/3 and came back with a convincing 6-0 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on 9/4.
EC continued to roll in their home-opener with a 3-0 shutout win over Nichols College on 9/6 before notching their first GNAC win of the year later in the week vs. Rivier with a 2-1 road victory on 9/10. The Saints suffered their first setback of the year on the road with a gutsy 3-2 loss to Norwich University before rebounding with back-to-back wins over Mount Ida (2-0 win on 9/17) and Wentworth (2-1 win on 9/19).
The team's next two W's would come against conference opponents as the Saints were able to record a 2-1 win over Suffolk University on 9/24 before helping Currie notch his 100th career win on 10/4 with another 2-1 win coming over Saint Joseph's College (ME). Following the historic win, the Saints would hit a rough patch dropping four consecutive games including a 5-4 overtime heartbreaker vs. Wheaton College who was the No. 18 ranked team in the country.
The squad would notch a forfeit victory over Pine Manor before playing to a 1-1 draw with Fitchburg State on 10/20. The last regular season win would come on 10/22 in a 6-1 final against Anna Maria College leaving the Saints with a 6-6-1 conference record which put them just outside the 2011 GNAC playoff picture.
Despite missing the GNAC tournament for the first time since 1998, the 2011 squad still posted the third-highest save percentage in the program's history at .830 (28 goals against - 137 saves) behind a strong year from junior goalkeeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.).
The Saints had two players recognized on the All-Conference squads as sophomore Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) and junior Brittany Ridge (Portland, Maine) received Second Team honors. Garvey led the squad with 12 goals and 25 points and ranked fifth overall in the conference in both goals and points. Ridge was the only player on the EC roster to play in and start all 18 games on the season as the tri-captain ended the year with seven points on a goal and a team-best five assists which also ranked tied for 10th in the GNAC.
The team will bid farewell to its two seniors in Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) and Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, Maine) after impressive four-year careers that saw the program compile a total of 48 victories while earning back-to-back trips to both the GNAC Finals and ECAC New England tournament during the 2008 and 2009 campaigns.
