Oct. 20, 2010
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Soccer Team cruised to a 7-0 win over the host Pine Manor College Gators on Tuesday evening at Hedley Field. The Saints led 2-0 at halftime, before scoring five second-half goals en route to the seven-goal shut-out. This was Emmanuel's third-straight conference win and the Saints are now 8-9 overall and 6-5 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play, while Pine Manor stands at 0-8-1 on the season.
Five different Emmanuel players scored goals in the contest. The Saints opened things up with a goal from Brittany Ridge (Portland, Me.) off an assist from Darcey Sullivan (Dalton, Mass.) in the 19th minute. Freshman Hillary Rouse (Amsterdam, N.Y.) then netted the Saints' second marker with an assist coming from Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, Me.) at 36:37. Emmanuel took a 2-0 lead into the break at halftime.
The second frame featured two Emmanuel goals coming in less than a minute, as sophomore Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I.) scored at 57:28 and classmate Lauren Foley (North Andover, Mass.) fired in a shot at 58:01. Ridge assisted Zerba's goal, while freshman Lindsey Garvey (Warwick, R.I.) notched the assist on Foley's first goal of the season. This sequence of scoring gave the visiting Saints a 4-0 lead.
The Saints then continued to build on their margin, as Ridge stuck her second of two goals in the contest, scoring in the 63rd minute with an assist from Kristina Marik (Airmont, N.Y.). Senior Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, Mass.) netted a shot just four minutes later with another helper coming from Foley.
Sullivan, who was just named the GNAC Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week for the second time this season, scored in the 70th minute to cap the scoring at seven goals for Emmanuel. Sullivan's goal against the Gators gave the rookie a team-best 8 this season.
Three Emmanuel keepers, Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.), Beatrix Hassler (Jericho, Vt.) and Jackie Murray (Saugus, Mass.), shared the 90 minutes in net for the Saints. D'Ottavio picked up her 5th win of the season, playing the opening 45 minutes in goal.
The Saints have two remaining regular season contests. Emmanuel will play host to the Colonels of Curry College in a non-conference battle on Thursday night at 7pm. The Saints will then host the powerful Blue Jays of Saint Joseph College (CT) on Saturday afternoon at 1pm. The four seniors on the Emmanuel squad will be honored prior to the start of Saturday's GNAC game.
