April 7, 2012
BOSTON, Mass. - After building up a large first half lead, the Emerson College women's lacrosse team was able to hold on for a 16-9 victory over Emmanuel College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Clemente Field. With the victory, the Lions improve to 4-4 on the year and 4-2 in GNAC play while the loss drops the Saints to 4-7 overall and 2-5 in GNAC action.
An unassisted goal by freshman defender Marlee Galper (Santa Monica, Calif.) with 8:44 remaining in the first half gave Emerson a commanding 9-1 lead before Emmanuel was able to close out the first half on a positive note, netting a pair over the final seven minutes of action. Freshman middie Madison Altwies (Southington, Conn.) made it 9-2 with her first tally of the game off a Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) assist and then with 1:12 left in the frame, Carr found junior midfielder Madeline Leahy (Cohasset, Mass.) to make it 9-3. Emerson would cap the half's scoring with a goal by sophomore Tracie Lombardo (Seaford, N.Y.) with just 12 seconds remaining to give the visitors a comfortable 10-3 halftime cushion.
Emerson would be in total control early on in the second half, netting four goals while allowing just one, an unassisted tally by freshman middie Alexia Basile (West Hartford, Conn.), to extend its lead to 14-4 with just over 20 minutes remaining in the contest.
Carr stepped up big for the hosts to keep the game in relative striking distance, netting three consecutive goals to pull Emmanuel to within 14-7 with 14:19 remaining. The first two tallies came off of free-position shots while the third marker was an unassisted tally.
With 9:40 to play, sophomore Mackenzie Johnson (Pasadena, Calif.) cut the hopes of an Emmanuel rally with a score to make it 15-7 but the Saints answered at the 7:08 mark with a man-up goal by freshman attacker Marykate McNulty (Madison, Conn.) to make it 15-8. Lombardo would net her third goal of the afternoon to make it 16-8 with a little more than two minutes remaining before Carr capped the scoring, netting her fifth tally of the game with just 22 seconds remaining to account for the 16-9 final.
Carr finished the afternoon with a game-high four goals to go along with two helpers for six points while Altwies chipped in with two goals.
Galper, Lombardo, sophomore defender Alex Corrado (Sammamich, Wash.) and sophomore attack Kanika Misra (Potsdam, N.Y.) all finished the day with three goals apiece for the Lions while Johnson chipped in with two goals and an assist.
Junior goaltender Emily Saeger (Center Valley, Pa) notched the win for Emerson, making eight saves while sophomore netminder Hillary Dandurant (Merrimac, Mass.) made 11 saves in net for the Saints.
Emmanuel will return to action on Tuesday, April 10 when they head to Mount Ida College for a 4:00 PM GNAC match up while Emerson hosts Anna Maria the same day in a 6:00 PM GNAC tilt.
