THE LEAD – Using an explosive start in the opening quarter, outscoring the Cadets 23-6, the Emmanuel Saints women's basketball team earned their fourth straight victory following Saturday's 84-41 victory over the Norwich Cadets in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It didn't take long for Emmanuel to stretch out to a double-digit lead, starting the game with a 13-3 run over 4:16, including six points by junior Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.). That double-digit advantage was added on to over the final 1:47, with the help of an 8-1 surge, capped by a Matela three-pointer, that had EC ahead 23-6 after the opening 10 minutes.
- The Emmanuel lead would reach as many as 22 in the second quarter as the Cadets capped the scoring in the first half with a free throw by junior Silas Bernier (Jaffrey, N.H.), as EC led 44-23, at the break.
- After maintaining a comfortable margin through the third quarter, the Saints opened up their largest lead of the afternoon with the help of a 21-2 surge, from the end of the third quarter to the middle of the fourth quarter, giving Emmanuel a 79-36 edge. The 43-point margin would hold until the final buzzer, as the Saints took home the 84-41 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Saints first-year Angelina Giordano (Chicago, Ill.) finished with career-highs of 21 points and seven steals, needing just 22 minutes off the bench to set those new career bests.
- Matela finished with 12 points, scoring the dozen thanks to all three-pointers, on a night of 4-for-9 shooting from beyond the arc.
- Sophomore Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) added 11 points and eight rebounds while senior Cait Barker (Plainville, Conn.) chipped in with eight points, off the bench.
- Cadets sophomore Maren McGinn (Georgia, Vt.) had a team-high 19 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals in 32 minutes.
- Sophomore Haley Brewster (Virginia Beach, Va.) added nine points with the help of 3-of-7 shooting from three-point distance.
