THE LEAD – Four Saints scored in double-figures to lift host Emmanuel College past Elms College, 84-32, on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at the Jean Yawkey Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints raced out to an 8-0 lead to open the game and never looked back, leading from start to finish in the GNAC victory. EC built a 21-10 first quarter lead behind nine points from junior guard Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.).
- Emmanuel's full court press was the difference maker in the second quarter as the hosts forced Elms into 12 turnovers in the frame and outscored the Blazers 30-8 to carry a 51-18 lead into the break.
- The Blazers slowed the high-paced Emmanuel offense down to start the third but Emmanuel regrouped to outscore the visitors by a 17-12 margin in the stanza to make it a 68-30 game heading into the final frame.
- The hosts held Elms to single digits in the fourth en route to the 84-32 final for their second straight GNAC victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Matela paced Emmanuel with a team-high 16 points including a 3-for-3 outing from downtown.
- Senior Cait Barker (Plainville, Conn,) junior Keira Eubanks (Portland, Maine) and first year Tramarie Mobray (Glen Burnie, Md.) added 10 points each in the win.
- First year forward Megan Reilly (Southbury, Conn.) grabbed a game and career-high 16 rebounds while sophomore Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) dished out a game-high seven assists in just 11 minutes of action.
- Kayla Jackson (Saugus, Mass.) paced Elms with a double-double scoring a game-high 17 points to go along with 13 rebounds.
