THE LEAD – Junior center Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) scored a career-high 27 points to power Trinity College (CT) over Emmanuel College, 60-45, Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball action at Oosting Gymnasium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The squads played a tight opening quarter as EC first year guard Tiffany Fischer (South River, N.J.) nailed a three with six seconds to play in the frame to make it a one point game at 11-10 in favor of the Bantams heading into the second stanza.
- After trading hoops to a 13-12 score, Trinity rattled off six quick points to open up some separation at 19-12 following a jumper by Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) with 7:07 to play in the half.
- Trinity outscored the Saints over the final seven minutes by an 11-7 margin to command an 11-point, 30-19 lead heading into the break.
- The hosts held EC to a 27.6% first half shooting percentage while connecting at a 53.3% clip in the second quarter to open up the double-digit lead.
- The Bantams came out of halftime on fire, putting together an 11-1 run to open the third to extend the lead to 41-20 after a layup by Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) put the hosts on top by 21 with 3:50 left in the quarter.
- Emmanuel answered with a 14-0 flurry fueled by eight points from sophomore guard Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) to stay in the hunt trailing by seven (41-34) heading into the final quarter.
- A layup by EC sophomore forward Desiree Robinson (New Haven, Conn.) with 4:34 remaining kept the distance at seven with a 49-42 score but Trinity closed the door on the Saints by finishing the night strong by outscoring Emmanuel in the final four minutes of regulation by an 11-3 margin to account for the 60-45 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Campbell finished the game shooting 10-for-17 from the field and added a game-high 15 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the campaign.
- Wax added 12 points in 31 minutes of action going 2-for-2 from the charity stripe in the win.
- EC junior Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.) led Emmanuel with 10 points while Chan finished with nine points and a game-high five assists.
- Trinity received 20 votes in the most recent D3Hoops.com national poll, the eighth most by a team from New England.
- The loss is the third straight for Emmanuel marking the first time since the 2017 season they program has dropped three in a row.
