Women's Basketball Caps EC Tip-Off Classic With 104-66 Win vs. Brooklyn
BOSTON - The Emmanuel Saints women’s basketball team scored over 100 points for the first time since Nov. 16, 2019, led this afternoon by junior Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.) and her career-high 22 points, as the Saints stayed unbeaten to start the season thanks to a 104-66 win on Sunday in the EC Tip-Off Classic.

THE LEAD – The Emmanuel Saints women's basketball team scored over 100 points for the first time since Nov. 16, 2019, led this afternoon by junior Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.) and her career-high 22 points, as the Saints stayed unbeaten to start the season thanks to a 104-66 win on Sunday in the EC Tip-Off Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a 22-22 opening 10 minutes, a first quarter that included both teams shooting over 50 percent from beyond the arc, the Saints offense exploded for 36 points in the second quarter.
- Emmanuel, led by Matela, caught fire early in the second, going on a 22-5 run over a 4:49 stretch. Matela scored 14 straight points in that run, shooting 5-of-5 from the floor, including four consecutive made three-pointers, all over a 2:22 span. By the end of the full 22-5 spurt, the Saints led 44-30, midway through the second quarter.
- The Saints led by as many as 18 in the first half while a three-point play by Bulldogs junior Nancy Pham (Woodside, N.Y.) finished off the opening 20 minutes that saw EC hold a 58-43 lead at the break.
- The offense kept coming in the third quarter with the Saints starting the third on a 15-5 run, boosting their advantage to 73-48. In total, EC outscored Brooklyn 31-12 in the third quarter, ultimately holding an 89-55 lead through three quarters.
- Saints first-year Reganne French (Chicago, Ill.) would inevitably supply the 100th point for the Saints, making a three-point shot from the left corner with 1:24 remaining. First-year Tiffany Fischer (South River, N.J.) added the final three Saints points in their 104-66 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Matela scored her career-best 22 points in just 21 minutes while shooting 8-for-10 from the floor, including 6-for-7 from beyond the arc.
- Junior Kiera Eubanks (South Portland, Maine) finished with career-highs of 15 points and nine rebounds, including six offensive boards. All-in-all, the Saints outrebounded Brooklyn 18-4 on the offensive glass, leading to a 22-3 advantage for EC in second-chance points.
- Sophomore Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) finished with 11 points while junior Allison Wild (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Desiree Robinson (New Haven, Conn.) chipped in with nine points, each.
- In the second quarter, Emmanuel shot 14-of-17 from the floor, a blazing hot 82.4 percent, including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. EC finished the game at 52.7 percent shooting, including 60 percent from three-point land.
- Pham and senior Gianna Gotti (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) each finished with 15 points. Gianna added four assists and a team-high three steals.
- Junior Dasha Goodman (New York, N.Y.) and sophomore Aleah Rafat (San Martin, Calif.) added 10 points apiece.

- The Saints return following the Thanksgiving Break as they head for No. 4 Amherst on Tuesday, Nov. 29, for a 7:00 p.m. game to finish up the month of November.
- The Bulldogs also return after the break, hosting the University of Rutgers-Newark on Monday, Nov. 28, at 6:00 p.m.
