THE LEAD – Five different players scored in double-figures to power the Emmanuel College women's basketball team past Medgar Evers College, 94-20, on Saturday afternoon in Day 1 action of the 39th Annual EC Tip-Off Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After trading points to open the contest, the Saints put together a 13-0 run early in the opening quarter to go ahead 18-3 fueled by 11 points from sophomore Yannie Chan (Hong Kong, China) to set the tone for the afternoon.
- EC scored a program-record 34 points in the opening quarter with 10 players finding the scoring column to give the hosts the early 34-9 cushion heading into the second.
- The Saints defensive front was impressive in quarter two, holding the Cougars to just one point on a free throw by Nana Samake (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as Emmanuel won the frame by a 24-1 margin to take a 58-10 lead into halftime.
- Emmanuel owned a 54.5% shooting clip in the owning stanza while holding Medgar Evers to just 14.8% from the field.
- Emmanuel opened the third quarter with eight straight points before their starters exited the game leading 66-13 midway through the frame.
- Over the final 15 minutes of play, the Saints bench outscored the Cougars by a 28-7 margin en route to the 94-20 final.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Chan finished the game with a double-double of 11 points and 10 assists while senior Cait Barker (Plainville, Conn.) shared the game-high with 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting.
- The first year trio of Angelina Giordano (Chicago, Ill.), Reganne French (Chicago, Ill.) and Megan Reilly (Southbury, Conn.) all chipped in with 10 points each while Reilly grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
- First year guard Tiffany Fischer (South River, N.J.) netted a season-high nine points to go with seven rebounds and junior captains Kiera Eubanks (Portland, Maine) and Olivia Matela (Swampscott, Mass.) added eight points each in the win.
- First year guard Jennifer Metra (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Cougars with a team-high eight points, also grabbing seven rebounds. First year Sheily Quezada (Brooklyn, N.Y.) added five points and boards. Both also added a pair of steals.
OF NOTE
- Prior to the start of the game, the Emmanuel Athletic Department honored Louis Yosinoff, Coach Andy Yosinoff's father and long-time Saints' supporter who passed away in 2017, with a dedication of the new bleachers.
- Along with honoring Louis, the Bleacher Dedication honored all of the generous donors that helped make the restoration project possible through their financial support.
- Over 40 Emmanuel women's basketball alumnae were in attendance as President Mary K. Boyd and some of the alum presented Coach Yosinoff with a plaque to honor Louis and all his contributions to the program.
