THE LEAD: The Emmanuel College men's volleyball team picked up their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory on Tuesday evening against the Chargers of Colby-Sawyer College. The Saints finished the three-set sweet with a stunning 12 services aces in comparison to none by the Chargers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints began the day with a quick 10-2 lead as Tyler Behsman (Derry, N.H.) completed seven serves in a row, including three service aces, before the Chargers broke up the scoring with a kill by Orlando Plagata (Los Angeles, Calif.). EC continued to roll through the set with kills by Gary Randall (Essex Junction, Vt.), Justyn Schueler (Trumbill, Conn.), and John Carroll (Massapequa, N.Y.), taking the first 25-19.
- The second set remained close through the first six points for either side, with a few miscues by the Saints attack, but EC began to pull away through the middle of the set with back to back kills by Randall and a towering kill by Schueler to extend the lead, 19-13. A late set 6-1 spree by Emmanuel, led by an assisted block by Seamus McDonagh (Long Beach, N.Y.) and Carroll pushed the Saints to a second set victory, 25-16.
- The third set was owned by Emmanuel after a 2-2 start, as Schueler recorded back-to-back kills and blocks by Josh McDonald (Smithtown, N.Y), Randall and McDonagh, to take the lead 15-6. A late set assisted block by Andrew Kovacs (Wellesley, Mass.) and Eric Miller (La Grange, Ill.) gave some energy to the Chargers, but EC closed out with a pair of kills by McDonagh and Randall, 25-12.
