LARIVIERE RUNS DOWN RECORDS AT POP CROWELL INVITATIONAL
Oct. 4, 2008
WENHAM, MA - Senior co-captain Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) won her second meet of the season on Saturday, finishing 1st out of a field of 276 runners at Gordon College's Pop Crowell Invitational. Lariviere's 5K time of 18:32 broke the course record by 8 seconds and her own Emmanuel program record by 20 seconds. Her 1st place finish led the Emmanuel Women's Cross Country Team to a 10th place finish out of 25 teams in the highly competitive Division III meet. The Saints also finished 2nd in the running out of the five GNAC teams competing.
The crisp fall air and the beautiful New England woods combined for the perfect setting for some fast times at the invitational. Emmanuel's senior co-captain Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) was the second Emmanuel runner to cross the finish line with her time of 20:39. The third Saint to finish was freshman Brittany Sorice (Dover, NH), who tied her best time of the year (21:32). Freshman Katelynn Defrain (Medfield, MA) improved on her personal best time by 39 seconds and placed 4th for Emmanuel. Rookie Patricia Montesquieu (Lawrence, MA) finished 5th for the Saints and improved her time by 41 seconds, while scoring in her first collegiate meet. Sophomore Victoria Cole (Carver, MA) dropped 50 seconds off her best. Senior Anna Merrow (Kennebunkport, ME) just missed her best time by 2 seconds, while sophomore Maureen Kellett (Westborough, MA) and freshman Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, MA) placed 8th and 9th for the Saints.
The Emmanuel men's team was looking to rebound from a tough finish in the 2007 Pop Crowell meet. Although running without rookie point-scorer Wesley Cowles (Hebron, CT), the team was able to finish 14th out of 24 competing programs. Freshman Stephen Armstrong (Revere, MA) continued to lead the way with his 28th place finish out of 232 runners. Classmate Maurizio Turco (Revere, MA) turned in another strong performance as he placed 2nd for Emmanuel. Sophomore Ben Cleveland (Auburn, ME) improved on his best time by 30 seconds and finished 3rd for the Saints. Rookie senior Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) also improved on his best time by over 40 seconds and ran fourth for Emmanuel. The 5th runner to cross the line for the Saints was junior Tim Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA), who just missed beating his all time best.
This week, the team will take a much needed break from competition. Emmanuel's next meet will be on Friday, October 17th at the 4th Annual Saints Invitational at Franklin Park. This year's meet will be the largest in its 4-year history with over 16 schools competing.
