CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS PERFORM WELL AT UMASS-DARTMOUTH
Sept. 20, 2008
Dartmouth, MA - The Emmanuel Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams competed in UMass-Dartmouth's Shriners Invitational on Saturday. The Saints faired well in the meet, which featured over forty competing colleges and universities. This was the biggest challenge the Saints have faced early this season, with competition from several top 20 NCAA teams.
The men raced first and Emmanuel was led by the freshmen trio of Stephen Armstrong (Revere MA), Maurizio Turco (Revere, MA) and Wesley Cowles (Hebron, CT). Junior Tim Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA) and sophomore Ben Cleveland (Auburn, ME) rounded out the scoring for the Saints, while improving on their times from last week. Seniors Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) and Brian Anderson (Akron, OH) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, for the Saints.
Senior Cathryn Lariviere (Windhm, NH) ran another strong race for the Emmanuel women with her 21st place finish, out of a field of 310 runners. Lariviere's finish was the best placing ever for an Emmanuel athlete at this competitive meet. Senior Christine Gaspar (Attleboro, MA) finished second for the Saints, while still healing from an injury last week. Rookies Brittany Sorice (Dover, NH) and Katelyn DeFrain (Medfield, MA) placed third and fourth for Emmanuel. Senior Anna Merrow (Kennebunkport, ME) ran another strong race, rounding out the scoring for the women's team. Freshmen Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, MA) and Patricia Montesquieu (Lawrence, MA) placed sixth and seventh for the Saints.
Emmanuel's next meet will be on Saturday (9/27) at the 41st Annual Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park. Both teams should have some tough competition next week as they run against NCAA Division II, III, and post-collegiate club teams.
