LARIVIERE TAKES 1ST AT TRAVIS FULLER INVITE;SETS NEW EMMANUEL PROGRAM RECORD

Warham, Mass. - Senior co-captain Cathryn Lariviere (Windham, NH) won the Mass Maritime's Travis Fuller Invitational cross country meet on Saturday afternoon, beating out a field of 96 runners in the Saints' first meet of the season. Lariviere's time of 18:52 set a new Emmanuel College women's program record.
Lariviere's first place finish, was followed by senior co-captain Christine Gaspar's (North Attleboro, MA) 3rd place finish and led the Saints to a 3rd place finish as a team. Gaspar recovered from a fall at the start of the race and completed the 5K course in a time of 20:21. Freshmen newcomer Brittany Sorice (Dover, NH) was the 3rd Emmanuel runner to cross the line in 18th place. Freshmen Katelyn DeFrain (Medfield, MA) was the fourth team member to cross the line in 32nd place. Sophomore Maureen Kellett (Westborough, MA) improved her time from last year's race by over a minute and established her new personal record for the distance, while rounding out the top five for the Saints.
Junior Anna Merrow (Kennebunkport, ME) also lowered her personal record as she placed 39th overall. The Saints finished as a pack with freshmen Stephanie Gomes (Ludlow, MA) placing 41st, freshman Patricia Montesque (Lawrence, MA) in 47th, freshman Laurence Bradford (Bethlehem, PA) placing 52nd and sophomore Victoria Cole (Carever, MA) in the 56th spot. Over 11 teams were entered in the meet and 96 athletes finished the race. Emmanuel placed 3rd overall with GNAC rival, Emerson College, winning the meet.
One the men's side, freshman Stephen Armstrong (Revere, MA) began his collegiate career with an impressive 5th place finish in a school record time of 27:06 for the 8k distance. He was followed by his former high school teammate, freshman Maurizio Turco (Revere, MA) in 17th place, as well as freshman Wesley Cowles (Hebron, CT) in 20th. New team member for the 2008 season, senior Brendan Ellis (Chelmsford, MA) finished 4th for the Saints and 58th overall. Ellis was followed by Tim Flaherty (Mattapoisett, MA) in 65th place to complete the top five for Emmanuel. Sophomore Ben Cleveland (Auburn, ME) finished in 66th and senior co-captain Brian Anderson (Akron, OH) ran 76th . The men's team placed 4th overall with eight teams competing.

The Saints will travel to Dartmouth, MA on Saturday (9/20) to compete in the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational against 40 other teams.
