WXC WINS RUNNIN' MONKS INVITE, MXC PLACES FIFTH
BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) and the Emmanuel College Women's Cross Country team were victorious at the Runnin' Monks Invitational, hosted by St. Joseph's College (Me.) on Saturday afternoon. The Saints men's squad placed fifth at the same event, led by junior Ian Chamenko's (Beacon Falls, Conn.) third-place individual finish.
BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) and the Emmanuel College Women's Cross Country team were victorious at the Runnin' Monks Invitational, hosted by St. Joseph's College (Me.) on Saturday afternoon. The Saints men's squad placed fifth at the same event, led by junior Ian Chamenko's (Beacon Falls, Conn.) third-place individual finish.
McCaffrey paced the Saints once again, running the 5K in 20:43.4 and finishing second overall behind only St. Joseph's (Me.) senior Heather Eaton (20:13.5). The Saints dominated the rest of the field, as senior Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.) took third place behind McCaffrey, and sophomore Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn., 21:23.0), freshman Marwah Haq (Methuen, Mass., 21:34.6), and freshman Mimi Duncan (Portsmouth, N.H., 21:37.5) took fifth, sixth, and seventh respectively.
Senior captain Julie Roberts (Williamsburg, Mass.) also placed in the top 20, finishing 18th overall with a time of 22:31.3. Freshman Katharine Holmberg (North Easton, Mass.) was the final Saint to score points, as she finished 29th, crossing the finish line in 23:10.8. The Saints finished with 23 points, outscoring second-place University of New England by 41 team points.
On the men's side, the Saints were the second GNAC team in the team standings, finishing 24 points back of Lasell, who was second overall. Chamenko was the top finisher for Emmanuel, as he has been all year, taking third place with a time of 28:42.3 in the 8K race.
Senior captain Sean Colford (Epping, N.H.) was the second Saint to cross the line, finishing tenth overall in 29:40.7. Senior Corey Hebert (Acushnet, Mass., 31:07.6), freshman Jefferson Zannoni (Merrimack, N.H., 31:23.8), and senior Craig Schoaf (Raynham, Mass., 31:56.9), took spots 3-5 for the Saints, finishing 30th, 35th, and 47th overall.
The Saints continue the march to the GNAC Championships with a home meet on Friday, October 16. The Saints Invitational will take place at Franklin Park and will begin at 4:00 p.m.
