BOSTON, Mass. – Emmanuel College freshman Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Cross Country Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Monday afternoon. This marks the second time this season the rookie has been honored by the GNAC as she was also tabbed to the Weekly Honor Roll back on Sept. 8.
Last week, McCaffrey put together one of the most memorable running performance's in Women's Cross Country program history, running the program's fastest-ever 5K time by a freshman on September 19 in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. McCaffrey posted an incredible 19:24 time in the 5K race, finishing first among Emmanuel runners and 33rd overall in a varsity field of 315 racers. Only three freshman finishers were faster than her in the race as the Rhode Island native ran at a 6:15 mile clip throughout.
After just two races, McCaffrey has established herself as Emmanuel's top runner, finishing first on the squad in both races.
Joining McCaffrey on the weekly GNAC reports was senior Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.), who was tabbed to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll after running the UMass Dartmouth course in 19:44, a new personal 5K best.
The Saints return to action this Saturday, Sept. 26 when they compete in the Codfish Bowl at Franklin Park with the women's race beginning at 11:00 AM followed by the men's race at 12:00 PM.
