BRISTOL, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams traveled to Colt State Park in Rhode Island on Saturday morning for their first meet of the 2015 campaign, running in the Roger Williams University Invitational. The Emmanuel Women finished the day with 5th place team finish out of the 15 competing schools, while the Emmanuel men ran 12th out of 14 teams.
Freshman Margaret McCaffrey (East Greenwich, R.I.) paced the Saints women with the only sub-21 minute 5k time. McCaffrey finished 13th overall out of the field of 196 with her time of 20:16 and was the second first-year runner to cross the finish. Senior Chloe Pangonis (Keene, N.H.) was the next Emmanuel runner in 32nd place overall with a time of 21:08. Sophomore Nicole Varca (Wethersfield, Conn.) bested her time from a year ago, improving by 35 seconds with a 42nd place finish and a time of 21:30 and not far behind her was rookie Mimi Duncan (Portsmouth, N.H.) in 49th place with a time of 21:37. Rounding out the Saints top five was another rookie in Marwah Haq (Methuen, Mass.), placing 60th overall with a 5k time of 22 minutes.
On the men's side, the Saints were without senior captain Sean Colford (Epping, N.H.) and struggled in the field with a team finish of 12th. Junior Ian Chamenko (Beacon Falls, Conn.) picked up some of the slack with a 29th place finish, racing the 5k in 17:25 but the next Emmanuel runner to cross the finish line wasn't until freshman Jefferson Zannoni (Merrimack, N.H.) placed 79th overall with a time of 18:48. Senior Corey Hebert (Acushnet, Mass.) was just seven second behind the rookie for an 83rd place finish while his classmate Thomas Tallo (Lincoln, R.I.) finished 92nd at 19:16 on the clock. Topping out the top five runners was senior Craig Schoaf (Raynham, Mass.) in 110th place with a time of 19:55.
Both teams will take a week off from competition, but will return to race on Saturday, September 19th, when the Saints compete in the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. The men's race kicks off at 10:30 AM followed by the women's at 12:00 PM.
