VOLLEYBALL TEAM SPLITS IN LOCAL TRI-MATCH

NEWTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Volleyball Team played in its first tri-match of the 2010 season on Saturday afternoon. The Saints opened up Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a 3-2 loss to host Mount Ida College. Emmanuel then rebounded to defeat Newbury College in straight-sets in a non-conference match. The host Mustangs swept both matches, topping Emmanuel,3-2, and then Newbury, 3-0. The double wins for Mount Ida boosted the team to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in conference competition. With the split, the Saints are now 2-7 overall and 0-1 in GNAC play.
After taking the first two sets from Mount Ida, 25-17 and 25-21, Emmanuel dropped the next three sets, losing 23-25, 17-25, and 9-15. The Saints then faced Newbury in the second match of three on the day, winning easily 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-9, 25-18.
In match one, the Mustangs went down 2-0 to a surging Emmanuel in the opening only to come stampeding back winning the next three consecutive games for the 3-2 victory. Mount Ida saw a couple of outstanding individual performances in this match with sophomore hitter Jennifer Ferreira (Shirley, Mass.) hammering down 19 kills on 44 attempts with no errors, while also chipping in eight digs. Sophomore Devyn Frank (Mystic, Conn.) also turned in an unreal performance statistically with 10 kills on 15 attempts also without an error, adding two solo blocks and two block assists. Sophomore libero Alexa Piekarski (Rye, N.H.) tallied a team high 12 digs for the Mustang defense. Senior captain Kira Feeter (Keene, N.H.) and junior setter Cody Fusco (San Francisco, Calif) enjoyed a solid overall day, combining for 41 assists.
Emmanuel's offense was led by junior outside hitter Jenna Ross (Centurburg, Ohio), who hit .421 with 21 kills in 38 attempts. Her double-double effort also helped lead the Saints' defense, as she has 22 digs on the day. Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, Ariz.) and Rebecca Stanton (Quincy, Mass.) added 14 and 9 kills, respectively. Andazola also gathered up 24 digs, while Yun-Ting Lee (Cambridge, Mass.) led the Saints' backrow with 31 digs in the match. Junior setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) dished out 42 assists in the effort.
In the second match of the day for Emmanuel, Ross recorded another double-double with 12 kills and 16 digs. Lee picked up 24 digs, while Olsen dished out 26 assists in the three-set win. Sophomore Moriah Logan (Halifax, Mass.) added 4 solo blocks and 3 service aces for the Saints.
Emmanuel will play again this Tuesday (9/21), when the Saints host the Crusaders of Eastern Nazarene College in a 7pm start in the Jean Yawkey Center.
