WESTERN CONN. SHUTS DOWN EMMANUEL, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Women's Volleyball Team fell to the visiting Colonials of Western Connecticut State University, 3-1, in non-conference action played in the Jean Yawkey Center on Thursday night. The loss sets the Saints back to 2-4 on the year, while Western Conn pulls out to 7-3 on the season.
The Colonials overpowered the Saints in the opening set, taking a commanding 14-6 lead early on. The visitors then eased to a 25-13 win to go up 1-0 in the match. A hard-fought 25-23 win in the second set, put the Colonials up 2-0. The Saints rallied for the third set and pulled out an exciting 25-15 win, bringing the match to 2-1, but Western Connecticut battled back and took the match with a 25-23 win in the fourth set.
Emmanuel was led by sophomore hitter Rebecca Stanton's (Quincy, Mass.) 9 kills. Sophomore setter Kathryne Olsen (Fairhaven, Mass.) dished out 24 assists, while junior libero Megan Clary (Cumberland, R.I.) fired off 2 aces for the Saints. Sophomore Jenna Ross (Centerburg, Ohio) and freshman Samantha Andazola (Queen Creek, Ariz.) combined for 23 digs in the effort.
Emmanuel will return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, when the Saints host a GNAC tri-match beginning at 12pm. Emmanuel will open the match vs. Rivier at 12pm. Rivier will then play Mount Ida College at 2pm and Emmanuel will take on Mount Ida at 4pm.
