THE LEAD – Finishing the night with 33 team kills and a .203 attack percentage, the Eastern Nazarene Lions defeated the Emmanuel Saints in straight sets on Tuesday evening in non-conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the opening set after the Saints and Lions split the opening eight points to a 4-4 tie, ENC junior Telma Zelaya (Tegucigalpa, Honduras) stepped behind the service line and delivered nine straight points, including five service aces, for the Lions, launching them to a 13-4 lead. Eastern Nazarene coasted to the finish following that run of serve, claiming the set 25-12.
- In the second set, it was the serves of Lions graduate student Amya Altman (Butler, Pa.) who got ENC going from the start, helping claim the first six points of the set. The Saints would make a run back, getting to within a point on multiple occasions, but an ENC 7-0 run, that included a pair of kills each for graduate student Halle Julian (Whitman, Mass.) and sophomore Eliana Baran (Beaumont, Calif.) would help create plenty of space and a 21-13 lead. Baran would cap off the second set with a kill, giving the Lions a 25-15 win.
- In the final set, a pair of scoring runs would ultimately prove the difference in Eastern Nazarene's straight sets sweep. ENC claimed eight of the first 11 points to hold an 8-3 lead but the Lions 8-0 run in the middle of the set quickly put them from up five points to leading 20-7 in the third. First-year Sierra Troyer (Milford, Del.) ultimately finished off the match with a kill, giving ENC the 25-10 set win.
