THE LEAD – Entering the night 30 assists away from becoming the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 career assists, Saints senior Rachel Coleman (Peabody, Mass.) landed exactly on the 30-assist total, while helping the Saints to a 3-1 victory over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen on Tuesday evening in non-conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After an early battle for momentum in the opening set, the Saints ran off a string of seven out of nine points, helping EC create separation at 17-10, midway through the set. The Anchorwomen closed to within four points, but the Saints responded with an 8-2 run down the stretch in their 25-15 first set win.
- In the second set, another battle for positioning resulted in RIC taking control thanks to back-to-back service aces by sophomore Nicole Normandin (Blackstone, Mass.). That pair of aces put Rhode Island College ahead by two, a lead they would hold for the rest of the set. RIC only increased their advantage throughout the set and capped off the 25-19 win with a kill by senior Amelia Murphy (North Attleboro, Mass.)
- In the third, a four-point spurt by Emmanuel made the difference in the Saints taking a 2-1 sets lead. The 4-0 run gave EC a 17-12 lead and while RIC closed to within a point late in the set, the Saints held off the Anchorwomen, claiming the 25-22 set win with the help of a kill by sophomore Jaiden Greaves (Wells, Maine).
- In the fourth set, scoring runs throughout helped the Saints maintain control of the set. A 7-3 run to start the set, paired with an 8-3 run later in the set had EC ahead 21-11, setting up Coleman's 1,000th assist. Two points later, a RIC serve was handled by senior Tatiana Correia (Peabody, Mass.), set by Coleman, and killed by senior Kerry Shea (Tewksbury, Mass.), giving the Saints a 22-12 lead and Coleman her career milestone of 1,000 assists. EC would wrap up the win after a RIC error, giving Emmanuel the 25-15 set win.
