UMass Boston Tops Women’s Volleyball in Boston Showdown, 3-0
BOSTON, Mass. - Graduate student outside hitter Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) slammed a match-high 12 kills while hitting at a .556 clip to power the UMass Boston women’s volleyball team over host Emmanuel College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16), Thursday evening on the Andy Yosinoff Court.

THE LEAD – Graduate student outside hitter Emilia Czapiewska (Saint Paul, Minn.) slammed a match-high 12 kills while hitting at a .556 clip to power the UMass Boston women's volleyball team over host Emmanuel College, 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-16), Thursday evening on the Andy Yosinoff Court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the most competitive set of the night, the squads traded points all the way to a 15-15 score before the Beacons briefly took control rattling off three straight points to move ahead 18-15. Emmanuel was able to close the game to 20-19 after a service ace from senior Caitlin Tannian (Reading, Mass.) but UMB finished the hosts off with a 5-1 run to win the frame.
- UMass Boston never trailed in the second set, racing out to a quick 5-1 lead and never looked back. The visitors hit an impressive .400 clip in the set (13-3-25) and only allowed the Saints to score back-to-back points on two occasions in the entire set en route to the 25-13 win to move the match to 2-0, UMB.
- The Saints came out strong in the third frame, holding an early 6-2 lead after an ace by junior Isabella Miller (Blackstone, Mass.) but UMass Boston regrouped and too the lead for good behind the service game of grad student Carsen Komminsk (Worthington, Ohio) who helped the Beacons go ahead 14-11 midway through the action. The Saints got as close as 15-13 before UMB closed the match on a 10-3 surge behind six straight service points from sophomore libero Ally Dean (Portland, Ore.) to seal the road win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- UMass Boston finished the night swinging at a .349 clip as a team while holding Emmanuel to a .067 hitting percentage.
- Komminsk dished out a match-high 32 assists, adding two aces for UMB while EC setter Rachel Coleman ended the match with 15 helpers.
- EC senior Anna Caristi (North Attleboro, Mass.) paced the hosts offense with a team-high six kills while hitting .455.
- Junior Aleks Qose (Athens, Greece) led all players with seven digs while first year Toni Guerra (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) served up a match-high three aces.
UP NEXT
- Emmanuel is back on Saturday for a GNAC tri-match hosted by Regis College. The Saints take on the host Pride at 11:00 AM followed by a 1:00 PM tilt vs. Anna Maria College.
- The Beacons will host Plymouth State university on Saturday at 2:30 PM in Little East Conference action.
