The Lead: Freshman outside hitter Grace Tepper (Kensington, Md.) recorded a match-high 16 kills to power Emerson College past host Emmanuel College, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-22), Thursday evening in non-conference women's volleyball action on the Andy Yosinoff Court.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions opened the match strong hitting .321 in the opening set compared to a negative -.030 percentage from the Saints to take an early 1-0 lead with a convincing 25-16 win.
- Emmanuel jumped out to an early lead in the second stanza (5-2) before Emerson evened the score at 6-6. The squads would trade leads in the middle portion of the set all the way up until the Saints took a 23-22 lead following a kill by junior outside hitter Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) that forced the Lions to call a timeout. Out of the break, the visitors rattled off three straight points to take the second frame, 25-23.
- Emerson raced out to the early 6-1 lead in the final set before the Saints answered to tie the score at 7-7. After trading points to a 12-12 score, Emerson took the lead for good on an Emmanuel hitting error at 13-12 and held on for the lead to preserve the 3-0 win.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Tepper led all players with 16 kills while hitting at a .294 clip for Emerson.
- Shelow paced the Saints with a team-best 13 kills while sophomore outside hitter Marissa Cataldo (Melrose, Mass.) added nine winners.
- Emerson junior libero Fara Cohen (Morristown, N.J.) was stellar defensively with a match-high 17 digs while junior setter Moira Brennan (Glenview, Ill.) ran the offense with 31 assists.
- Emmanuel junior Carly Church (Higganum, Conn.) collected 29 assists to go with seven digs.
- Emerson dominated the service game, collecting nine aces compared to just two by the hosts.
- The Lions also owned the match up at the net, tallying 15 total blocks compared to zero from Emmanuel.
WHAT'S NEXT?
- The Saints return to action on Saturday, September 30th for a tri-match at home against Mount Ida (12:00 PM) and Dean College (4:00 PM).
- Emerson is back the same day, hosting a tri-match against WPI (12:00 PM) and Pine Manor (4:00 PM).
