The Lead: The Emmanuel College Women's Volleyball team dropped a four set match to Salem State University. The Saints took the first set Thursday night, but could not hang onto the lead in non-conference play on Andy Yosinoff Court in Boston, Mass.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Emmanuel were edged by Salem State in kills 48-44 as well as assists 45-41
- The Saints and Vikings were even on the defensive with both teams tallying 73 digs and four blocks
- Emmanuel junior Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) boasted a game high 18 kills
- Mackenzie Salls joined the 1,000 assist club during the third set claiming a game high 39 assists on the night
- Saints setter Carly Church (Higganum, Conn.) assisted on 36 points adding two blocks while Vikings middle hitter Jasmine Severino also accounted for two blocks
- The match concluded in four sets lasting 111 minutes
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Saints and Vikings were neck and neck through the first 20 points of the opening set until Emmanuel went on a 7-2 run to create some distance leaving the Vikings trailing 18-11
- Emmanuel shut the door on Salem State in the first set with the final score reading 25-18
- The second stanza remained tight until Salem State went on a 7-1 tear to open a 13-5 lead before closing out the set 25-22.
- With the Saints trailing in the second set 21-14 the blue and gold strung together a 6-1 run to claw back into the frame, Salem State closed out the set 25-22.
- The third set went back and forth with the teams knotting up the score on six different occasions, but the Vikings edged out the Saints 25-23
- The fourth frame was the closest of the night with the Vikings needing an extra point to beat the Saints 26-24.

- The Saints return to action Saturday, September 23 when they travel to Norwich University for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference showdown.
- Salem State will travel to the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Saturday, September 23 in conference play
