Saints Drop Two Matches at Springfield Invitational
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Saints lost their final two matches at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday. Springfield College swept the Saints 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17), while the match against Oneonta State took four sets 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13).

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Emmanuel College Saints lost their final two matches at the Springfield Invitational on Saturday. Springfield College swept the Saints 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-17), while the match against Oneonta State took four sets 3-1 (25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13). Freshman Mary Shelow (Miami, Fla.) led the Saints in kills with 13 over the course of the two matches.
Springfield dominated the opening set, rattling off a 7-1 run that turned a 3-2 deficit into a 10-3 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Saints battled to a 12-12 tie in the middle of the second set, but were unable to hold of the Pride, eventually falling 25-19. Freshman Angelica Czercowy (Hebron, Conn.) had three kills in the second set alone.
Emmanuel held a 14-13 lead in the third set when Springfield's Lauren Holt went on a service string of nine straight points, including four aces to give Springfield a 22-14 lead and eventually the match.
Junior Sarah Schemerhorn (Los Angeles, Calif.) and freshman Carly Church (Higganumc, Conn.) both hit double digits in assists in the first match of the day with 14 and 11 respectively. Six Springfield players had at least four kills, with Kelsey McGayhey leading the way with nine.
In the first set of the match against Oneonta State, the Saints had leads of 7-2 and 14-13 before the Red Dragons ended the set with a 12-2 run.
After falling behind 2-0, Emmanuel led for nearly the entire third set but would relinquish the lead to Oneonta St at 21-20. This set however, would go the Saints' way, as Czercowy picked up a kill to close out the set at 25-23.
The Red Dragons, led by four players with double digit kills, including Gabrielle Eppolito's 13 and Erin Avery's 23 assists, would end the match with a four-set victory
With two losses on the day, Emmanuel falls to 1-2 in the young season. Springfield remains unbeaten in 2015 after the victory (3-0), while Oneonta State improves to 2-1.
Next up for the Saints is the home opener on September 8 as a Western Connecticut State comes to town for a 7 p.m. start.
