BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Emmanuel College women’s volleyball team opened up the 2014 season competing in the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational at Moravian College, playing four matches this past weekend. The Saints return to Boston with a 2-2 record, earning wins on each day they were in action.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Emmanuel College women's volleyball team opened up the 2014 season competing in the 12th Annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational at Moravian College, playing four matches this past weekend. The Saints return to Boston with a 2-2 record, earning wins on each day they were in action.
EC opened the season strong with a 3-0 victory over Centenary (N.J.), dominating play in their first set of the year win a 25-4 win. Sophomore middle hitter Kaitlyn Atkinson (Brookline, N.H.) led the way with 11 kills on 15 swings for a .733 hitting percentage while senior Christine Durkee (Salem, Conn.) rattled off a game-high five aces. Sophomore setter Sophie Fish (North Attleboro, Mass.) dished out 28 assists in the win.
The Saints were unable to complete the Day 1 sweep, falling to York (Pa.), 3-0, in the night cap. Senior right side Sarah Colby (West Barnstable, Mass.) recorded nine kills and a .529 hitting clip while junior setter Shannon Dudley (Morro Bay, Calif.) registered 24 assists and 14 digs.
Day 2 action opened with a 3-0 loss to Ramapo despite Colby notching 11 kills. Senior defensive specialist Cara Callahan (Medway, Mass.) posted a match-high 21 digs but it was not enough as the Saints hit just .154 as a team from the floor.
Emmanuel rebounded in their final match of the tourney, topping Alvernia 3-1. EC dropped the first set, 25-22 before rallying to take the next three frames (25-21, 25-18, 25-20) for the win. Sophomore outside hitter Cassie Chruscielski (Duluth, Minn.) slammed home 16 kills and 11 digs in the win while Fish ran the offensive show with 39 helpers. Callahan and Durkee also recorded double-digit dig totals, tallying 12 and 11, respectively.
Callahan was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts over the weekend, recording 46 digs to average 3.83 digs per set.
Emmanuel returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 3 when they travel to Danbury, Conn. for a non-conference match-up vs. Western Connecticut State University at 7:00 PM.
