FRAMINGHAM STATE TOPS WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, 3-1
Junior outside hitter Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) smashed down a match-high 23 kills to lead the Framingham State University women’s volleyball team past Emmanuel College, 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18), Tuesday evening at the Jean Yawkey Center. With the victory, the Rams improve to 10-3 on the year while the loss drops the Saints to 3-10.
BOSTON, Mass. – Junior outside hitter Andressa Fernandes (Framingham, Mass.) smashed down a match-high 23 kills to lead the Framingham State University women's volleyball team past Emmanuel College, 3-1 (25-14, 17-25, 25-17, 25-18), Tuesday evening at the Jean Yawkey Center. With the victory, the Rams improve to 10-3 on the year while the loss drops the Saints to 3-10.
Framingham State took the early 1-0 lead in the match with an impressive first set in which they hit .414 as a team, slamming home 15 kills. Fernandes set the tone for her teammates, hitting .667 in the frame with seven kills on nine attacks with just one miscue en route to the 25-14 win for the visitors.
The Saints battled right back to even the match at 1-all with a 25-17 win in the second set. Emmanuel capitalized on a total of eight hitting and two service errors by the Rams as well as stellar back row play by senior Yun-Ting Lee (Keelung, Taiwan) to get back into the match.
The Rams were able to regroup after the shaky second set and come right back with a 25-17 win of their own to take the 2-1 lead in the match. Fernandes put home four kills in the set while the Rams served up four aces to put the pressure back on the hosts.
Emmanuel did all that it could to even the match at 2-2 in the fourth set but ultimately fell short in the Rams 25-18 win for the 3-1 victory on the match. With the score tied at 17-17, FSU was able to rattle off four straight points to gain a comfortable 21-17 lead. Fernandes finished the match off with her 23rd and final kill of the night to give the Rams their 10th victory of the season.
For FSU, sophomore setter Kassandra Jermyn (Auburn, Mass.) ran a balanced offense dishing out 31 assists. Sophomore middle hitter Ashley Nee (Hanson, Mass.) chipped in with nine kills while freshman outside hitter Danielle Girard (Tivoli, N.Y.) added eight kills in the win. Sophomore libero Michelle DeJesus (Framingham, Mass.) registered a match-high 17 digs on the defensive front.
For Emmanuel, freshman outside hitter Danielle Rose (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) put down seven kills while sophomore right side Sarah Colby (West Barnstable, Mass.) added six kills. Sophomore setter Alison Donnelly (Longmeadow, Mass.) dished out 15 assists while Lee recorded a team-high 11 digs for EC.
The Saints return to action on Thursday when they head to Danbury, Conn. for a non-conference match vs. Western Connecticut State University at 7:00 PM while the Rams travel the same day, heading to Elms College for a 7:00 PM matchup.
