WOMEN'S TENNIS SWEEPS MOUNT IDA IN GNAC QUARTERFINAL MATCH

BOSTON, Mass. - The 3rd-seeded Emmanuel College Tennis Team defeated 6th-seeded Mount Ida College, 9-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Quarterfinal match played at the Winsor School on Thursday night. The Saints, who were making their 9th-straight appearance in the GNAC Tournament, posted six singles wins and three doubles victories on the way to the 9-0 sweep. With the win, Emmanuel will now advance to take on second-seeded Emerson College in the GNAC semifinals on Saturday night.
Emmanuel junior Taylor Dey (Woodbridge, Conn.) rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Elizabeth Olszewski in No. 1 singles action. Freshman Alex Hadlock (Framingham, Mass.) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over Melissa Smith at No. 2 singles. Sophomore Amanda Woznicki (Bristol, Conn.) topped Kayla Horton, 6-0, 6-1, in third singles. The Saints' fourth singles win came via a 6-0, 6-1 win from Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.), defeating Elyse Horton. Emmanuel's fifth and sixth singles points were straight-set sweeps, 6-0, 6-0, by Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) and Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Me.).
Dey and Konecnik teamed up for a first doubles win over Olszewski and Smith, 8-2. Hadlock and Woznicki earned an 8-0 win over K. Horton and E. Horton. Emmanuel's senior co-captain Victoria Trull (Lowell, Mass.) and sophomore Brittany Rothstein (Tiverton, R.I.) earned an 8-4 win over Nanouma Joachin and Patti Ann Doucete in the third doubles slot.
The win boosts the Saints overall record to 13-2 on the season. Emmanuel's only two losses of the season have come from the two teams seeded above the Saints in the tournament, Simmons College and Emerson College. Emmanuel will now advance to take on Emerson this Saturday night in the GNAC semifinals. The 2nd-seeded Lions will host this semifinal contest on the indoor courts at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club at 6:30 PM in Dorchester, Mass. The winner of this match will advance to the GNAC Championship this Sunday (10/23). The Saints' last trip to the GNAC Championship was in 2006.
