SAINTS NIP WILDCATS, 5-4
Oct. 12, 2011
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Emmanuel College Women's Tennis Team won a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Johnson & Wales University in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at the Moses Brown courts on Wednesday afternoon. The match, which proved to be a much-needed victory for the Saints, had crucial implications for seeding in the upcoming GNAC Tournament.
Due to weather concerns, the singles competition was conducted first with Emmanuel taking four of the six matches. Johnson & Wales freshman Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) posted a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 1 spot, while fellow rookie Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) won a marathon 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 decision at the third spot. Emmanuel junior Jenna Reid (Lincoln, R.I.) recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win at third singles, while junior Jenni Hewes (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 victory in the sixth singles spot. Emmanuel sophomore Jenny Konecnik (Sparta, N.J.) earned a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 5 singles slot for the Saints.
In doubles play, JWU closed the gap to 4-3 after an 8-3 win at the first doubles position by Borr and freshman Andrea Sultan-Campbell (Caracas, Venezuela). That would be as close as the Wildcats would get, however as Emmanuel wrapped up the win with a 9-7 victory by Reid and Hewes at third doubles.
With the loss Johnson & Wales falls to 5-6 on the season and 4-3 in the GNAC, while Emmanuel improves to 10-2 for the year and 5-2 in league play. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 15th when they travel to Anna Maria for a GNAC contest, starting at 6:00 p.m. Emmanuel will attempt to host Wentworth Institute of Technology on Thursday afternoon (10/13) in a non-conference match that was previously rescheduled two other times.
