Oct. 4, 2008
WEYMOUTH, MA - The Emmanuel Saints edged the Emerson Lions in a GNAC battle played at the Weymouth Club on Saturday night. Emmanuel was defeated in two out of three doubles matches, and entered singles play facing a 2-1 deficit in the match. The Saints then took four of the six singles matches to come away with a 5-4 win on the Lions' home courts.
As singles play began, Emmanuel struggled early with four Saints, Megan Harrington (Leicester, MA), Catherine Dunphy (Duxbury, MA), Rachel Strauss (Westwood, MA), and Caitrin Dunn (Toms River, NJ), losing their opening sets to the Lions. Freshman Victoria Trull (Lowell, MA) gave the Saints another point with her 6-3, 6-2 win at sixth singles. Sophomore Alexandra Shakra (Bedford, NH) put Emmanuel up 3-2 with a 6-1, 6-4 win at 3rd singles.
Dunphy then battled back to win her second and third sets and gave the Saints a 0-6, 6-4, 6-1 win at fourth singles. Dunn was defeated in her second set and recorded a 2-6, 6-7 loss at 5th singles, while Strauss lost in 1st singles, 2-6, 4-6. The score was then knotted at 4-4 with one match left to be decided.
Sophomore Megan Harrington faced the toughest challenge on the night, as the rookie played up a slot, filling in for junior captain Nory Hayes (Newport, RI) at second singles. Harrington's consistent play helped her rebound from a 3-6 loss in the opening set to take the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-1, giving the Saints their 5th and the deciding point in the match.
With this win, Emmanuel improved to 5-4 on the season and will face GNAC and Colleges of the Fenway rival, Simmons College, on Tuesday, 10/7, at 4pm.
