SAINTS DROP TWO TO MUSTANGS
April 20, 2008
Boston, MA - The Emmanuel College Softball Team was defeated in both games of Sunday's conference double-header with Mount Ida College. The Saints lost the opening game, 4-1, and were edged by the Mustangs in the nightcap, 5-4.
The Mustangs' junior pitcher Kerri Kwasek (Framingham, MA) hurled a two-hitter to pick up the win in the early game. Emmanuel's two hits came in the 3rd inning, when sophomore outfielder Erin McSheffrey (Woburn, MA) drove a ball deep to left for a double and senior outfielder Coley Ferraro (Lakeville, MA) followed with a gapper, resulting in a Mount Ida throwing error that scored McSheffrey. Freshman Christina Lacoste (Belchertown, MA) pitched the full seven innings for the Saints, facing 34 batters and striking out three.
Emmanuel trailed early in game two, with the Mustangs taking a 2-1 lead after two innings. The Saints held Mount Ida scoreless in the third and sophomore Sarah Palmer-Thompson (Dennis, MA) ripped a solo homerun in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 2-2. The Mustangs managed two more runs in the fourth to take a 4-2 advantage. Sophomore shortstop Danielle Andruskewic (Orange, CT) was walked and reached second on a passed ball to open the bottom of the fourth for the Saints. Senior Jen Walsh (West Springfield, MA) then hit a sacrifice fly to right that advanced Andruskewic to third. Ferraro knocked her home with her second hit of the day, cutting the deficit to one run.
Mount Ida tacked on another run in the top of the sixth, 5-3. The Saints did not pick up another hit until the bottom of the seventh, when Ferraro singled again. Sophomores Kristina Borrelli (Kingston, MA) and Deanna Mastrovito (Worcester, MA) were walked, advancing Ferraro to third. Palmer-Thompson then hit a shallow fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed and scored Ferraro for the Saints' fourth and final run of the game. Senior captain Stephanie Rege (Chicopee, MA) went the distance in the circle for the Saints, giving up 8 hits and fanning 4.
Emmanuel (2-31-1) will play again on Monday night (4/21) in two make-up games at Albertus Magnus College. The double-header will be played at West Haven High School, beginning at 6pm.
