April 18, 2010
BOSTON, Mass. - Simmons College served up a double win over Emmanuel College on the Sharks' senior day played on Clemente Field. The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) and Colleges of the Fenway (COF) rivalry ended with the Sharks sweeping the Saints, 5-0 and 6-0, on Sunday afternoon. The wins boosted Simmons to 20-9 overall and 15-7 in the GNAC. The Saints now stand at 9-20 overall 5-17 in league play.
In the opened, Simmons bounced back from a tough week and broke the game open in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs off of two hits and three walks. Leading the offensive charge was Courteney Collier with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, which proved to be the winning run. Annie Thompson had two runs batted in on a bases loaded single in the first and Leah Derderian added an RBI single in the bottom of the 4th to increase the score to 5.
Collier earned the win, going the distance, striking out 5 Saints and scattered four hits and three walks throughout the 7 frames. Collier also received great defensive plays from the Sharks' fielders.
In a fitting twist, Katelyn Bourgeois recorded her first collegiate win in her first collegiate start on the mound on senior day in game two. Bourgeois struck out 6, walked two and scattered 5 hits.
After a scoreless start for both teams, the Simmons offense erupted in the bottom of the fourth, scoring all six of their runs. With two runners on and one out, Amanda Gould hit a hard line drive to right center for a triple, easily scoring both runners. Ari King followed with an RBI single, scoring Gould. Steph Murray then delivered an RBI double down the left field line. Emily Nalband then connected for a two run home run over the centerfield fence to push the score to 6.
Simmons will end the regular season with a conference twin bill at Emerson College. Emmanuel will close out its regular season with a home double-header versus Pine Manor College on Tuesday night at 6:00 pm. The seven seniors on the Saints' squad (Deanna Mastrovito, Chelsie Baldwin, Kristina Borrelli, Erin McSheffrey, Samantha Luther, Danielle Andruskiwec and Sarah Palmer-Thompson) will be honored prior to the start of the game.
