THE LEAD – Senior pitcher Hannah Smith (Cambridge, Ohio) tossed her second consecutive complete-game shutout to power Muskingum University over Emmanuel College, 2-0, in Day 2 softball action at The Spring Games in Auburndale, Fla. Smith hurled a no-hitter in her previous start vs. Thomas College and followed it up with a gem vs. the Saints to move the Muskies to 4-1 on the year while EC falls to 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- EC looked to get off to a hot start in the first inning as Taylor Chelak () led off the game with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Julyanne Pacheco (Somerset, Mass.). Junior shortstop Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.) walked to put two on with the one out before the Muskies induced an inning-ending double-play to keep Emmanuel off the board.
- Muskingum got all the run support it would need in the third with an RBI single up the middle by Nicole Young (Bartlett, Ill.). The Muskies loaded the bases on two walks and a single by Rosie Hayes (Akron, Ohio) before Young connected on the go-ahead hit to make it 1-0, MU. Emmanuel thwarted any further damage as senior pitcher Tianna Dawe (Lynn, Mass.) retired the next two batters to escape the bases loaded jam with just the one run.
- The Muskies added an insurance run in the sixth on an unearned run with two outs in the frame to double the lead to 2-0.
- The Saints threatened again in the seventh loading the bases with two outs on hits by senior Maegan Amsler (Hanover, Mass.), sophomore Sammy Hayes (Braintree, Mass.) and a walk from first year outfielder Madison Hinkley (Somers, Conn.) before MU senior pitcher Hannah Smith (Cambridge, Ohio) closed the door for her second consecutive complete-game shutout win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Smith improves to 3-0 in the circle on the year, surrendering just three hits while striking out seven in the win.
- Dawe was the tough-luck loser, working six innings and allowing the two runs (one earned) on just four hits.
- Smith and the Muskies held Conti hitless for the first time this season and just the ninth time over her EC career.
