THE LEAD – The Emmanuel Saints softball program took home a pair of victories on Wednesday night at Rivier, extending their winning streak to 17 games; the longest active streak in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- With runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the second, a single up the middle by Saints junior Jadynne Hill (Haverhill, Mass.) and an insuing error by the Raiders, would allow an Emmanuel run to score, giving EC a 1-0 lead.
- The Saints took advantage of another two-out error, this time in the fifth. With a runner on third, senior Renae Lacroix (Cumberland, R.I.) reached on an error, scoring the runner from third and doubling the EC edge.
- Emmanuel added a third run in the top of the sixth on the only RBI of game one. Senior Grace Orcutt (Lexington, Mass.) singled to right, scoring senior Avery Webb (Hollis, N.H.) to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
- The Raiders had their chance to respond in the bottom of the seventh with one out and runners on the corners, but the attempted rally fell short after Saints junior pitcher Tianna Dawe (Lynn, Mass.) threw out Raiders sophomore Olivia Boucher (Berlin, N.H.) at the plate for the second out. Dawe finished the game by striking out sophomore Amanda Atkinson (Mason, N.H.), preserving the shutout and a 3-0 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
- Dawe threw all seven innings for Emmanuel, allowing four hits to go with eight strikeouts to improve to 10-5.
- Saints sophomore Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.) batted 2-for-4, including a double.
- Webb finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
- Raiders senior Nicole Capra (Windham, N.H.) finished 2-for-4, both singles.
- First-year Courtney Marioles (Hudson, N.H.) had a double, finishing 1-for-3. In addition, Marioles threw six innings allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits with three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- With the game tied 4-4, heading to the top of the sixth, a Saints two-out rally helped lead Emmanuel to their 17th straight victory.
- Senior Kiana Hinson (Whittier, Calif.) found herself on second when fellow classmate Abigail Conley (Riverside, R.I.) stepped in to deliver a single to right field, scoring Hinson for what turned out to be the game-winning run.
- Later in the sixth with runners on first and second, Conti produced a double to center field, scoring both Saints and giving EC a 7-4 lead.
- Further insurance was added in the seventh with junior Maegan Amsler (Hanover, Mass.) who made her season debut in game one of the night, doubling into the right-center field gap, scoring two more Saints, increasing the Emmanuel lead to 9-4.
- The Saints looked poised to lead after taking a 3-1 advantage in the third, but Rivier quickly took back the lead with a three-run bottom of the inning, taking a 4-3 lead in the process.
- Emmanuel would look to Dawe in the fourth inning to come into the pitching circle and slow the Rivier momentum. Dawe entered the game with Capra on first and no outs and proceeded to retire the next 12 Rivier batters consectutively, allowing no other runner to reach base in the 9-4 EC win.
