THE LEAD – The Saints softball program's winning streak is up to nine games while improving to 8-0 in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference this season, following a doubleheader sweep of Saint Joseph's College of Maine on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
- The Monks took an early lead in the bottom of the first, taking advantage of a bases loaded situation. First-year Sylvia Foley (Scarborough, Maine) cleared the bases on a double to left field, giving SJC a 3-0 lead.
- The Saints offense responded in the top of the fourth, equaling the bases-clearing double that the Monks had in the first. EC senior Kiana Hinson (Whittier, Calif.) doubled to the right-center gap, tying things at 3-3. First-year Abigail Farr (Windsor Locks, Conn.) added an RBI single in the fourth, putting EC ahead 4-3.
- Emmanuel added four more runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a two-run single by first-year Madison Marks (Edgewater Park, N.J.) followed by an error by St. Joe's that scored two Saints, upping the EC lead to 8-3.
- The Saints kept the offense rolling in the sixth with sophomore Olivia Conti (Cranston, R.I.) hitting her team-leading seventh home run of the season, an inside-the-park, two-run home run, on this occasion, increasing the lead to 10-3.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 1)
- Farr finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, including the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth.
- Conti and senior Grace Orcutt (Lexington, Mass.) both finished 2-for-4. Conti added two RBI and two runs scored.
- Junior Tianna Dawe (Peabody, Mass.) threw all seven innings, allowing four runs, all earned, on eight hits with nine strikeouts. The win moves Dawe to 5-5 this season.
- Monks junior Olivia Howe (Arundel, Maine) finished 3-for-4, all singles, with a run scored.
- Sophomore Lydia Goodnough (Kennebunkport, Maine) went 1-for-3, including a triple in the sixth.
- Junior Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) went five innings, allowing eight runs, four earned on seven hits. Pence drops to 5-5 with the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
- Saints runs in the top of the first and third would have EC out to an early 2-0 lead. An SJC error kept the first inning alive, allowing Orcutt to step to the plate and deliver an RBI single to left. In the third, it was yet another Monks miscue that allowed Conti to score, giving Emmanuel a 2-0 lead.
- The Saints would double their advantage in the top of the fourth thanks to a two-run home run by senior Jadynne Hill (Haverhill, Mass.), her third of the season, boosting the lead to 4-0.
- Another two-run inning for EC came in the fifth after a sac-fly for Hinson was followed by an RBI single by Farr, adding to the Saints edge, now at 6-0.
- Two more Saints came across in the sixth thanks to back-to-back RBI singles by Orcutt and Marks, lifting EC to an 8-0 advantage.
- Meanwhile, in the circle, Saints first-year Brenna Whitaker (Cranston, R.I.) was dealing. With the help of the defense behind her, Whittaker needed just 68 pitches in earning her second shutout of the season.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS (GAME 2)
- Saints senior Avery Webb (Hollis, N.H) finished 3-for-4, all singles, with two runs scored.
- Orcutt, Farr, and senior Renae Lacroix (Cumberland, R.I.) all went 2-for-3 in game two. Orcutt added two RBI while Farr finished with one RBI.
- Whittaker gets the victory to improve to 4-4 this season with her second shutout of the year.
- Monks senior Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.) provided the only multi-hit performance of game two for SJC, finishing 2-for-3.
- Junior Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) went 5.2 innings, allowing eight runs, seven earned, on 12 hits. The loss drops Hatch to 2-5 this season.
