KILCOYNE K’s ROCKFORD IN 7-1 WIN FOR EC SOFTBALL
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Sophomore hurler Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) struck out 16 batters while allowing just one hit to lead the Emmanuel College softball team past Rockford University, 7-1, during spring break softball at the Gene Cusic Softball Classic. With the win the Saints improve to 5-2 on the year while the loss drops the Regents to 2-5.
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Sophomore hurler Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) struck out 16 batters while allowing just one hit to lead the Emmanuel College softball team past Rockford University, 7-1, during spring break softball at the Gene Cusic Softball Classic. With the win the Saints improve to 5-2 on the year while the loss drops the Regents to 2-5.
Rockford jumped out to a 1-0 lead, plating a run in the top of the first without collecting a hit. The Regents took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch to bring in freshman Sarah Rizzo (Monee, Ill.).
Emmanuel answered with four in the bottom half of the inning to move in front, 4-1. Junior shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) opened the inning with a double down the line and the score at 1-1 on an RBI single up the middle by rookie third baseman Abeby Alexiades (Kingston, Mass.). Sophomore first baseman Susie Kieselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) connected on a single to the centerfield wall, driving in a pair of runs to make it 3-1 and would come around to score on an RBI single to left by freshman catcher Charlotte Powers (Peabody, Mass).
An RBI single to left in the second inning by sophomore Samantha Adams (Sanford, Maine) made it 5-1, EC.
A single by RU freshman Alexandra Storey (Dexter, Mich.) registered the Regents first hit of the morning off of Kilcoyne A walk put two runners on for Rockford but Kilcoyne was able to work her way out of the jam, striking out the side for the third consecutive inning to preserve the 5-1 lead for the Saints.
EC capitalized on a Rockford error in the fifth to push across its sixth run of the game as sophomore outfielder Cassey LePage (Somerset, Mass.) collect an RBI with a groundout, plating Alexiades to increase the lead to 6-1. In the sixth, a leadoff triple by junior outfield Marianne Halas (Lynn, Mass.) followed by an RBI single to center from Davis account for the final EC run of the afternoon, making it 7-1.
Kilcoyne improves to 3-1 on the year with the win while RU junior Brittany Bura (Chicago, Ill.) suffered the loss going the distance for the Regents.
The Saints return to action later today against Wilmington (OH) at 11:00 AM.
