SOFTBALL SPLITS VS USJ WITH 3-1 WIN IN FINALE
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman pitcher Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) allowed five hits in a complete game win and sophomore shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) homered as the Emmanuel College softball team earned a doubleheader split with a 3-1 victory in the finale over University of Saint Joseph (CT) Friday afternoon.
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Freshman pitcher Jill Kilcoyne (Worcester, Mass.) allowed five hits in a complete game win and sophomore shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) homered as the Emmanuel College softball team earned a doubleheader split with a 3-1 victory in the finale over University of Saint Joseph (CT) Friday afternoon.
In the first game, Ashley Gall (Stafford Springs, Conn.) had two hits and two RBI and Patti Sciglimpaglia (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched a complete game to lead the USJ to a 5-2 win over EC in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at St. Joseph.
The hosts finished the day 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the GNAC; Emmanuel is 10-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Blue Jays got the first run of the day in the second inning of the first game. Sarah Miller (Bristol, Conn.), who had two hits and scored twice, singled through the right side with one out, stole second and came home on Gall's double down the right field line. Emmanuel tied it in the third when Kayla Howard (Belmont, N.H) was hit by a pitch, moved up on a bunt and scored on a Davis double.
St. Joseph had a decisive three-run rally in the bottom of the third. Haley McCall (Lebanon, Conn.), Miller and Sciglimapglia had consecutive one-out singles with McCall scoring the go-ahead run on Sciglimpaglia's base hit to center. Gall had a an RBI-single to score Miller and Sciglimpaglia came home on sister Mary Sciglimpaglia's fielder's choice when a play at second failed to get an out. The Blue Jays tacked on the final run when Danielle Circosta (Feeding Hills, Conn.) doubled and Emily Vigue (Lebanon, Conn.) appeared to also double, but the later was called out on appeal for missing first base.
USJ outhit Emmanuel 9-7 and Sciglimpaglia struck out seven and walked none for her fourth win of the season.
Emmanuel scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings of game two. Davis walked to start the game and eventually scored an unearned run coming in from third while Samantha Adams (Sanford, Maine) was caught in a rundown between first and second. Brenna Gilmore (San Carlos, Cal.) had an RBI-double to score Susie Kieselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) in the fourth and David homered to center to lead off the fifth.
USJ scored in the sixth when McCall hit a one-out single and scored on a two-out double by Patti Sciglimpaglia.
USJ plays at Johnson and Wales Sat. April 5 in a 1 p.m. GNAC doubleheader; Emmanuel also returns to conference play Saturday, hosting Mount Ida for two, beginning at noon.
