MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.. – Sophomore pitcher Val Kiers (West Warwick, R.I.) hurled a complete game shutout to power the Emmanuel College softball team past Cazenovia College, 2-0, Wednesday afternoon in Day 4 action of the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic. With the victory, the Saints improve to 3-3 on the year while the loss drops the Wildcats to 1-5.
Emmanuel got on the board with a run in the first following a pair of two-out hits. Freshman first baseman Susie Kieselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) belted a double to left-center and came around to score on an RBI single from senior designated player Jennifer Garrity (Lynn, Mass.) to make it 1-0.
The Saints made it 2-0, adding a run in the fourth when freshman third baseman Kara Madden (Silver Spring, Md.) reached on an infield single and moved over to second on a Cazenovia throwing error. A productive ground out by senior catcher Julia Levins (Uxbridge, Mass.) moved Madden over to third and she would come around to score on an RBI single to left by sophomore left fielder Marianne Halas (Lynn, Mass.).
Kiers was in control the entire game, never allowing a base runner past second base. The sophomore scattered four hits, all singles, while striking out one to earn her second win of the year. Wildcats sophomore pitcher Jenna Kraegar (Constanableville, N.Y.) pitched well in defeat, going the distance and allowed two runs (one earned) on 10 hits. Neither pitcher surrendered a walk in the contest.
Kiers, the GNAC Pitcher of the Week, is the first EC hurler to toss a complete game (7 inning) shutout since Kelly Lloid ('13) blanked Pine Manor on March 30, 2013.
Davis and Kieselback both finished the game going 2-4 at the plate while Madden added a 2-3 performance.
EC returns to action later this afternoon when they take on Medaille College at 3:30 PM while Cazenovia also plays later today, facing Hilbert College at 3:30 PM. Stifle
