MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Junior pitcher Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, Pa.) hurled a complete game shutout to lead the Penn State Altoona softball team past Emmanuel College, 4-0, Monday afternoon in Day 2 action at the Fast Pitch Dreams Spring Classic. With the win, the Lady Lions improve to 3-1 on the year while the loss dips the Saints to 1-2.
The Lions grabbed a 1-0 lead with an unearned run in the top of the third. Junior Alamaria Miller (Muncy, Pa.) walked to lead off the inning and moved over to second on a single by freshman Allison Simpson (Port Matilda, Pa.). Miller would advance to third following an infield fly call and then come around to score on an Emmanuel throwing error on the same play to account for the 1-0 score.
The Saints threatened to even the score in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with no outs. Freshman first baseman Susie Keilselback (Wethersfield, Conn.) had the first crack with the bases juiced but popped up to the gap between short and centerfield. Sophomore second baseman Kerianne Vulpis (East Rockaway, N.Y.) attempted to tag up from third on the out but was gunned down at the plate by sophomore Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, Pa.). EC freshman pitcher Brenna Gilmore (San Carlos, Calif.) kept the inning going with a single to re-load the bases but DeArmitt retired the side with a strikeout to get out of the jam.
In the fourth, senior catcher Julia Levins (Uxbridge, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to put the tying run at second for Emmanuel but DeArmitt was able to strand her there to preserve the 1-0 Lions lead heading into the fifth.
After Gilmore retired nine straight PSU batters, junior first baseman Kelly Chambers (Snow Show, Pa.) made it 2-0 with a homerun over the centerfield fence in the sixth. Following the homer, back-to-back singles from junior catcher Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, Pa.) and sophomore right fielder Summer Feathers (Altoona, Pa.) chased Gilmore from the game. DeArmitt helped her own cause and welcomed the new Emmanuel pitcher with a two-RBI triple down the right field line to make it 4-0.
Levins finished the game with two hits for Emmanuel as did senior third baseman Kayla Howard (Belmont, N.H.)
DeArmitt improves to 3-0 on the year with the victory while Gilmore takes the loss and falls to 0-1.
Emmanuel returns to action tomorrow morning when they face Penn State Berks at 9:30 AM.
