Myrtle Beach, SC – Keystone College improved to 6-1 to open their season on Thursday afternoon and avenged their only loss of the season with a 5-2 decision over Emmanuel College in non-conference action at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Giants, who used a four-run fourth inning to take control of Thursday's second game, will close out their Spring Break trip on Friday morning against Mount Ida College while the Saints will take on Ursuline College in a twinbill tomorrow morning.
Keystone pushed across the first run of Thursday's nightcap in the second inning when Jackie Murray (Galeton, PA/Galeton Area) singled home Lisa Ostrander (Pittston, PA/Pittston Area) from third. The Giants held the 1-0 advantage until the top of the fourth inning when they used a four-run fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead.
Samantha Hartman (Red Bank, NJ/Red Bank Regional) hit a bases clearing double that plated Ostrander, Murray, and Tiana Genetti (Weatherly, PA/Weatherly Area) before being brought home two batters later by an Abby Cohen (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) base hit.
Emmanuel (3-5) got two runs back in the fifth inning, but it would be the last time the Saints would score on the day thanks to Karissa Worobey (Scranton, PA/Scranton), who went the distance on the mound for Keystone, scattering eight hits and walking two while striking out a pair of Saints' batters. EC's runs were scored by freshman shortstop Catherine Davis (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior catcher Julia Levins (Uxbridge, Mass.) who each collected one-out singles to right and came around to score on RBI singles from freshman designated player Anna Mahoney (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore right fielder Alex Bressette (North Easton, Mass.).
Ostrander, Genetti, Sara Schraden (Allentown, PA/William Allen), and Kaitlyn Sawicki (Factoryville, PA/Lackawanna Trail) had two hits apiece to lead the Giants offense with Hartman's three RBIs and Ostrander's two runs scored leading all players. As a team, Keystone recorded 11 hits on the afternoon.
Davis and Levins each finished the game with two hits a piece for the Saints while junior first baseman Kayla Howard (Belmont, N.H.) reached base safely in all three trips to the plate by drawing a walk, collecting a single while also getting hit by a pitch.
All five of the Saints defeats in Myrtle Beach have all been by four or less runs.
