SAINTS WOMEN'S SOCCER SHUT OUT BY MCLA IN ECACs
Nov. 11, 2009
North Adams, Mass. - The fifth-seeded Emmanuel Women’s Soccer Team fell to fourth-seeded Mass College of Liberal Arts, 3-0, on Wednesday afternoon in an ECAC Quarterfinal game at MCLA’s Shewcraft Field. With the win, MCLA moves to 15-5 and will take play the top-seeded Judges of Brandeis University in the ECAC Semifinals. Emmanuel College wrapped up the 2009 season at 14-7-1.
The first half of Wednesday’s quarterfinal was a see-saw affair, as both teams had good chances to break the ice. The game changing play came late in the first half when MCLA keeper Jen Wehner (Cooperstown, N.Y.) committed a foul in the box, resulting in an Emmanuel penalty kick with three minutes remaining. Wehner redeemed herself as she stopped the penalty kick taken by Saints’ top scorer Kate McKenna (Holyoke, Mass.). This was McKenna’s first PK miss of the season.
MCLA would then quickly transition after a Saints’ corner kick, as junior forward Danielle Parenteau (Southampton, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the season off a tremendous pass from Sam Miller (Reading, Mass.). The Trailblazers would close out the half with a slim 1-0 edge.
MCLA rode the end of the half momentum into the second stanza, when junior Jess Tietgens (Stamford, Vt.) added to her school goal scoring record just 3:42 into the half. She dribbled past a defender to the top of the box before beating Saints rookie keeper Jessica D’Ottavio (Pawling, N.Y.) to the top left corner for an unassisted goal, her 27th of the season.
Tietgens added another record to her impressive collection when she knocked home a Parenteau rebound for her second goal of the day, her 28th this season. The goal would also be her 60th point of the season, breaking her previous mark of 59 set one year ago.
Wehner earned the win in goal for MCLA, stopping five shots on the afternoon. The Trailblazers held a slim advantage in shots 19-17 on the day. D’Ottavio finished the game with 7 saves for the Saints.
