Oct. 30, 2008
FITCHBURG, Mass. - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team registered its fifth consecutive victory, defeating Emmanuel College, 1-0, in non-conference action this evening at Elliot Field. Falcons' sophomore Ali Landry (Bellingham, Mass.) connected for the lone goal of the match to pace Fitchburg State, while classmate Heather Sharp (Halifax, Mass.) dished out the assist.
After an even first have, which witnessed only three shots on net, Fitchburg State broke the scoring deadlock on Landry's fourth goal of the season in the 48th minute of the match. The Falcons had several scoring opportunities late in the second frame, including a shot for Landry's second goal of the contest, but the Saints' defense maintained its post to keep the match within striking distance.
Emmanuel held a slim 13-12 advantage in shots with a 7-1 lead in corner kicks, but freshman keeper Melanie Berent (West Hartford, Conn.) withstood the Saints' pressure to silence any scoring opportunities. The rookie net-minder recorded a season-high eight saves in her second start of the year, while senior goalkeeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, N.H.) totaled three saves in net for the Saints.
