SAINTS WRAP SEASON WITH 4-3 LOSS AT CURRY

MILTON, Mass.- In the final game of the 2011 season for both teams, the Emmanuel College Saints were defeated by Curry College, 4-3, in non-conference women's soccer action played in Milton on Tuesday night. With the win the Colonels finished with an overall record of 4-14. The Saints wrapped up their campaign at 10-8-2 on the year.
Despite Emmanuel outshooting Curry 15-7, the teams entered intermission tied at one goal apiece. The Saints were the first to get on the board just 4:40 into the game. Emmanuel was awarded a corner kick taken by senior midfielder Logan Carr (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). Carr's corner was then one-timed by Shawn Crifo (Newburyport, Mass.). Senior Melanie Hoffman (Topsham, Me.) was able to play the rebound into the back of the net past the Colonels' junior goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.). This was the third goal of the season for Hoffman.
With eight minutes remaining in the half, the Colonels were able to even the score. Junior Kelly Howe (Walton, Neb.) sent a through pass to sophomore Brittney McLaughlin (Wilmington, Mass.) for her sixth goal of the season. McLaughlin went one-on-one with the Saint's junior goalkeeper Jackie Murray (Saugus, Mass.) and was able to place the ball in the lower corner, knotting the game at 1-1 heading into the break.
The Saints finished the half with 15 shots, eight on net, eight corners and five fouls. The Colonels finished with seven shots, four on net, three corners and two fouls.
Emmanuel scored the first two goals of the second frame to take a 3-1 lead. Junior Meghan Zerba (Cumberland, R.I.) scored first for the Saints just 10:55 into the half. Zerba's goal, her 5th of the season, came off an assist from sophomore Donandrea Myette (Portsmouth, R.I). Just over three minutes later Emmanuel went up by two, when sophomore Ashley Cervin (Milford, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal. Cervin shot the ball from just outside the 18-yard box and it soared over sophomore goalkeeper Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.) and into the back of the net.
The Colonels were determined to regain control and fought back to score three unanswered goals. At the 65:49 mark, senior Suzanne Jensen (Framingham, Mass.) scored her first of two when sophomore Alayna Coakley (Grafton, Mass.) sent her a through pass. McLaughlin scored her second on the night just 2:11 minutes later to tie the game at 3-3. Coakley was credited with her second assist off of McLaughlin's goal.
In the last game of her career, Jensen scored the game-winner off an assist from McLaughlin. Jensen received the pass and was able to place the ball in the top right corner of the net, giving the Colonels the 4-3 edge.
Emmanuel outshot Curry, 33-14 on the night with a 21-10 shots on goal advantage. The Saints also owned a 9-6 edge in corner kick opportunities. Hardy made seven saves in 45 minutes of play. Lorge stopped 11 shots in the second half to earn the win for Curry. Murray, who was making her 2nd collegiate start between the pipes for the Saints, made six saves in the 90-minute effort.
