Boston, Mass. - Rookie Genna Optatut (Freehold, N.J.) drilled a shot from six yards out to the center of the net in the 68th minute to give Emerson College (10-4-1, 7-3-0 Great Northeast Athletic Conference) a 1-0 victory over Emmanuel College (9-5-0, 7-2-0 GNAC) in a key GNAC match played at Rotch Playground on Saturday afternoon. Opatut scored off a deep cross from the right side from classmate Meghan Foehl (Cheshire, Conn.).
The scoreless first half was highlighted by a point-blank save by Emmanuel's senior net minder Laueryn Furtney (Barington, N.H.) off the Lions' shot by sophomore Lindsay D'Andrea (Medford, N.J.). The shot highlighted a first half in which Emerson dominated offensively, taking 10 shots to only five for the Saints. Emerson also had a 4-1 lead in corner kicks. Furtney had six saves to only one for Emerson's freshman keeper Baileigh Wirzburger (New Bedford, Mass.).
The second half was more evenly polayed with Emerson holding a slim 8-7 lead in shots. Furtney notched five saves in the period to four for Wirzburger. The game was a physical affiar, with Emerosn holding a 20-8 lead in fouls.
The loss ends the Saints' 4-game GNAC win streak. Emmanuel is now 9-5 on the season and 7-2 in the GNAC. The Saints will travel to Northfield, VT on Tuesday to take on the Cadets of Norwich University in a 3pm start.
